And the best bit? You absolutely don’t need to be an artist to create something you love.

Cute Autumn Pottery Painting Ideas

Not quite ready to go full Halloween? These autumn pottery ideas are perfect for September, October and beyond.

1. Mini pumpkins

You really can’t go wrong with pumpkins.

Keep things traditional with oranges and greens, try soft pinks and neutrals, or give each pumpkin a completely different pattern. Checks, stripes, flowers, dots and tiny bows all work brilliantly.

2. Pumpkin mugs

Turn a simple mug into something completely autumnal with little painted pumpkins.

You could scatter tiny pumpkins all over it, paint one larger design on the front or add autumn leaves and vines around the whole mug.

Extra points for filling it with hot chocolate afterwards.

3. Autumn gingham

Checks and gingham look gorgeous on plates, mugs and trinket dishes.

Try rust, brown, mustard and cream for a classic autumn palette, or use pink, burgundy and sage for something a little different.

4. Mushrooms

Mushrooms are one of those designs that somehow look cute on everything.

Paint a classic red and white toadstool, a whole collection of tiny mushrooms or go for earthy browns and creams for a more neutral look.

5. Autumn leaves

One of the easiest autumn pottery painting ideas if you’re not feeling super confident.

Paint individual leaves around the edge of a plate or bowl, create a falling-leaf pattern on a mug or use different autumn colours to make each one completely unique.

Tiny acorns make a really sweet repeat pattern and are surprisingly easy to paint.

They work particularly well around the outside of plates and bowls or scattered across a mug.

Think fluffy brown cows, warm neutral backgrounds and maybe even a few little autumn leaves.

Florals definitely aren’t just for spring.

Try deeper reds, oranges, dusky pinks, mustard and dark greens for a floral design that feels completely different for autumn.

Halloween Pottery Painting Ideas

Okay… now we can get spooky.

Halloween pottery doesn’t have to be scary. In fact, some of our favourite designs are definitely more cute than creepy.

9. Little ghosts

Possibly the easiest Halloween pottery painting idea of them all.

A little white ghost with two black eyes can transform almost any piece of pottery.

Paint one big ghost, cover your piece in tiny ones or give each ghost a completely different expression.

10. Ghost mugs

A plain mug + lots of tiny ghosts = very cute Halloween mug.

Try adding stars, moons or little pumpkins between them, or keep it super simple with black and white.

11. Pink Halloween

Who said Halloween has to be orange and black?

Pink pumpkins, pastel ghosts, bows, stars and little bats can create a completely different Halloween look.

If spooky isn’t really your thing, this one might be.

12. Bats

Tiny black bats are incredibly simple to add to mugs, plates and bowls.

Paint them over a colourful background, add them around a moon or scatter them amongst stars for an easy Halloween design.

13. Spiderwebs

Spiderwebs look impressive but are actually quite simple once you break the design down.

Try one large web in the corner of a plate or add smaller webs around a mug.

And obviously, a tiny spider is optional.

14. Black cats

Paint a full black cat, a little cat face or just a pair of ears and whiskers.

They’re perfect for Halloween but cute enough that you’ll probably want to use your pottery all year.

15. Witches

Pointy hats, striped tights, cauldrons and broomsticks give you loads of options without having to paint an entire witch.

If you want something Halloween-ish without going full pumpkin, try a night-sky design.

This is a brilliant one for children, although we’ve seen plenty of grown-ups create some pretty brilliant monsters too.

Big eyes, funny teeth, colourful spots… there really aren’t any rules.

Skeleton designs can be as simple or detailed as you like.

Try a tiny skeleton, skulls around the edge of a plate or even a funny skeleton doing something completely unexpected.

Easy Autumn Pottery Painting Ideas for Beginners

If you’ve ever told us “I’m not artistic”, this section is for you.

You really don’t need complicated designs to create gorgeous pottery.

19. Autumn polka dots

Pick three or four autumn colours and cover your piece in dots.

That’s it.

It works brilliantly on mugs, bowls, plates and decorations, and you can make the dots as neat or as random as you like.

20. Colour blocking

Choose a few colours you love and divide your pottery into sections.

Straight lines, wavy sections or completely random shapes all work. It’s simple, modern and very difficult to get wrong.

21. Stripes

Another super easy one.

Try vertical stripes on a mug, rings of colour around a bowl or alternate between two autumn shades.

They don’t need to be perfectly straight either.

22. Paint splatters

Sometimes the best designs are the ones you don’t overthink.

Use a few autumn colours and create a splattered effect across your pottery for something completely unique.

Bows have been everywhere lately and they’re surprisingly easy to add to pottery.

You don’t actually have to paint anything recognisably autumnal.

What Pottery Is Best for Autumn Designs?

Almost anything!

Mugs are brilliant if you want something you’ll actually use throughout the colder months, while plates and bowls give you a bigger blank canvas for more detailed designs.

Trinket dishes are great if you’re a little nervous about painting something larger, and seasonal pottery shapes can do some of the hard work for you. If your pottery is already shaped like a pumpkin, ghost or witch, you’ve already got a pretty good starting point!

Traditional autumn colours like orange, rust, mustard, brown and deep green are always gorgeous, but you definitely don’t have to stick to them.

You don’t need to be able to.
