Looking for things to do in Tiverton this August Bank Holiday weekend? Whether you’re planning a family day out, meeting up with friends or desperately searching for something to do if the Devon weather doesn’t cooperate, there’s plenty happening in and around Tiverton.

Here at Happy Glaze Pottery, we’ve got a particularly busy weekend planned, with pottery painting alongside two special events on Sunday 30th August.
Here are a few ideas for your Bank Holiday weekend in Tiverton.
Paint your own pottery in Tiverton 🎨
Of course, we’ll start with pottery painting!
Happy Glaze Pottery is a pottery painting studio, café and bar in the centre of Tiverton, Devon. You can choose your pottery from our shelves, pick your paints and create something completely your own.
And you absolutely do not need to be artistic.
Some people arrive with a Pinterest board full of ideas. Others sit down with absolutely no idea what they’re going to paint until they start. Both are very welcome!
We have pottery for children and adults, from mugs, bowls and plates to figurines, vases and plenty of slightly more unusual pieces too.
Once you've finished painting, we glaze and fire your pottery in our kilns at over 1000°C before it’s ready to collect.
If you need a little inspiration before your visit, have a look at our 37 pottery painting ideas for some ideas to get you started.
Planning to visit over Bank Holiday?
We always recommend booking ahead, particularly during school holidays and weekends. Walk-ins are welcome when we have room, but some sessions do become completely full.
You can also check our FAQs before your visit if you’d like to know a little more about how everything works.
Meet Cinderella & Sleeping Beauty at our Princess Pottery Experience 👑
On Sunday 30th August, 10:30am–12pm, we’re welcoming two very special visitors to Happy Glaze.

Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are joining us for our Princess Pottery Painting Experience!
This isn’t just a quick character appearance. The session combines pottery painting with a magical princess experience, giving children plenty of time to paint, meet the princesses and enjoy the morning.
We only run a small number of our Princess Pottery Experiences and our previous event was such a lovely morning.
There are now only four tables remaining for this one, so if you’ve been thinking about coming, we’d recommend booking soon.
Spend Sunday afternoon at Crafternoon Tea 🫖🎨
If your ideal Bank Holiday involves cake and something creative, this one might be more your thing.
Also on Sunday 30th August, we’re hosting Crafternoon Tea at Happy Glaze.
You’ll settle in at your table for an afternoon of pottery painting alongside a proper afternoon tea from The Ginger Pig Catering Company.

Your ticket includes afternoon tea, a drink and £10 towards the pottery you choose to paint, so you can pick your own piece from the shelves when you arrive.
It’s a lovely one for a Bank Holiday catch-up with friends, a mum-and-daughter afternoon, couples or anyone who fancies doing something a little different with their Sunday.
Dietary requirements can also be catered for, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. Just let us know when booking.
Looking for more things to do in Tiverton?
If you’re visiting Happy Glaze from further afield, there’s plenty around Tiverton to turn your pottery painting session into a full day out.
Explore Knightshayes
Just outside the town centre, Knightshayes is a National Trust house and estate with gardens, woodland and plenty of space to explore.
Over the summer holidays they're also running their Summer of Play until 6th September, with different activities throughout the week. These include outdoor games, creative activities and even Pokémon sessions with local business Bridge Troll Hobbies on Wednesdays. The main Summer of Play area is open from 10am–4pm and the activities are included with normal admission.
It could make a great combination with a pottery painting session if you're planning a full family day in Tiverton!
Discover Tiverton Museum
Tiverton Museum Of Mid Devon Life is another brilliant option, particularly if the weather isn't playing ball.
Their Food, Glorious Food summer family activities are running until 5th September, with a themed trail and play stations around the museum. They also have Crafty Tuesdays and hands-on Fun Thursday activities during the school holidays.
There's plenty of local history to discover too, including the museum's famous Tivvy Bumper steam engine.
Play some games at Bridge Troll
For something a little different, Bridge Troll Boardgame Café on Angel Hill is a board game café and hobby shop in the centre of Tiverton.
If you've got children who love Pokémon, trading card games, board games or tabletop gaming, this is definitely one to know about. They're also involved with some of the summer activities at Knightshayes this year, including the Wednesday Pokémon Club.
It's only a short walk from Happy Glaze too, so you could very easily fit both into the same trip.
Take a walk along the Grand Western Canal
For something outdoors, head to Grand Western Canal Country Park.
The canal is one of our favourite places to recommend if you want to stretch your legs, have a picnic or enjoy a slower afternoon after exploring Tiverton.
You can also find Tiverton Canal Co & Horse Drawn Barge at the canal basin, home to Tiverton's famous horse-drawn barge.
Visit Tiverton Pannier Market
Right in the town centre, Tiverton Pannier Market is home to independent traders selling everything from local produce and handmade items to books, gifts and food.
The regular general market runs on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with other markets during the week, so it's well worth having a wander through while you're in town.
It's also particularly handy if you're visiting Happy Glaze, as the Market Place car park is right next to the market and only a short walk from our studio.
Step back in time at Tiverton Castle
Another one you might not immediately think of is Tiverton Castle, tucked away close to the town centre.
If you're interested in local history, it's an easy addition to a day exploring Tiverton and a chance to discover a completely different side of the town.
Make a day of it!
You could easily make a full Tiverton day out of it: start with a walk around Knightshayes or the Grand Western Canal, head into town for lunch and a look around the Pannier Market, then finish with a couple of hours pottery painting at Happy Glaze.
And if the Devon weather has other ideas, there are plenty of indoor options too, from pottery painting and Tiverton Museum to board games at Bridge Troll.
There really is more happening in our little town than you might think!
What else is happening at Happy Glaze?
Bank Holiday weekend might be getting closer, but there’s lots more happening at the studio over the coming weeks too.
From pottery painting and clay workshops to themed evenings, family sessions and adults-only events, we’re constantly adding different ways to get creative.
The easiest place to see everything currently available is our What’s On page.
And if you just fancy coming in, choosing something from the shelves and painting at your own pace, you can book a regular pottery painting session here.
We hope to see lots of you over the Bank Holiday weekend! 🎨
